• Tower server — looks like a large desktop. Suits small offices with one or two servers and no rack.
• Rack server — standard-width unit mounted in a rack, measured in U height (1U, 2U). The usual choice for server rooms.
• Blade server — thin modules in a shared chassis, for large installations needing density.
• Storage server or NAS — built mainly to hold files and backups.
• Hyperconverged systems — combine compute and storage in clustered units for virtualisation.

What to check before buying

• Workload: file sharing, ERP, databases, virtualisation or video recording each need different CPU, RAM and disk layouts.
• Processor count and core count, RAM with ECC and spare slots for expansion.
• Storage type and RAID level, hot-swap bays, and redundant power supplies.
• Remote management features so that administrators can reach the server even if the operating system fails.
• Warranty and service level: on-site response within a stated time, and OEM authorisation for support.
• Operating system and virtualisation licences, which are often priced separately, and rack, cooling and UPS requirements.

Common brands include Dell, HP Enterprise, Lenovo, Cisco and Supermicro.

How much storage do we need?

Add current data, expected yearly growth for three to five years, and backup space. RAID reduces usable capacity, so confirm the usable figure.

Do we need a backup solution too?

Yes. RAID protects against disk failure, not deletion, ransomware or fire. Plan separate backups, including an offsite copy.
