- RO (reverse osmosis) purifier — removes dissolved salts and is the usual choice where borewell or tap water has high TDS.
- UV purifier — treats microbes in low-TDS water and does not reduce dissolved salts.
- UF purifier — gravity or low-pressure membrane filter that removes particles and some microbes, needing no electricity in many models.
- Under-counter or wall-mounted office purifier — typically 10 to 25 litres per hour for a pantry or reception.
- Commercial RO plant — capacities from 50 to several thousand litres per hour for schools, hospitals, factories and housing societies, with pre-treatment and storage.
What to check before buying
- Get your water tested first: TDS, hardness, iron and turbidity decide whether RO, softener or pre-filter is needed.
- Output in litres per hour and the recovery rate, because RO rejects a share of input water.
- Membrane make and expected life, filter and cartridge replacement schedule.
- Material of tank and contact parts, which should be food grade.
- Electrical load, inlet pressure needs and space for a reject-water drain or reuse line.
- Installation, free service visits, AMC terms and a GST invoice.
Who buys them
Offices, schools, hospitals, shops, factories, housing societies, contractors, NGOs and government offices.
Frequently asked questions
What size RO plant do I need for a school?
Plan for roughly 3 to 5 litres of drinking water per person per day, then add margin for peak use. For 500 students this suggests a plant of about 250 to 500 litres per hour with a storage tank.
Is RO always necessary?
No. If a lab test shows low TDS, UV or UF may be sufficient, and removing too many salts is not always desirable.
How often should filters be changed?
Sediment and carbon cartridges are usually changed every few months and membranes after one to three years, depending on water quality. Common brands include Kent, Aquaguard, Pureit and Livpure.
