Types

  • Black-and-white (2D) ultrasound — basic scanners for general abdominal and obstetric imaging.
  • Colour Doppler — adds blood flow imaging for cardiac, vascular and obstetric work.
  • Portable and handheld units — laptop-style or pocket probes for bedside, emergency and field use.
  • Trolley-based premium systems — higher image quality and more probes for large hospitals.
  • 3D and 4D systems — volume imaging used in obstetrics and specialist centres.

What to check before buying

  • PCPNDT Act, 1994: any centre that uses ultrasound must be registered with the appropriate authority, and the machine must be registered with the centre. Sellers also report sales to the authority, so keep the paperwork ready.
  • CDSCO registration or import licence for the device, as applicable.
  • Probe types supplied, such as convex, linear, endocavity and cardiac, and their frequencies.
  • Image quality, software packages, storage and DICOM support.
  • Safety features, power backup and a stabiliser.
  • Installation, operator training, warranty duration, probe warranty, AMC and a GST invoice.

Who buys them

Hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic centres, clinics, NGOs and government health facilities.

Frequently asked questions

Which probes should I order first?

A convex probe is the usual starting point for abdominal work, with a linear probe for superficial structures. Add others based on the specialities you plan to serve.

Do I need registration before buying?

Yes, registration under the PCPNDT Act is required for the facility using the machine, so complete it early. Suppliers often ask for the registration certificate before delivery.

Is a portable unit enough for a clinic?

Often yes for routine use, but check the probe range and image quality. Common brands include GE, Philips, Samsung, Mindray and Siemens.
